Environmental Effect on Health Care and Wellbeing and Active Interventions (ENACT)

About the project

The ENACT project is a Horizon Europe-funded initiative (2025–2028) dedicated to advancing health through environmental risk analysis. By bridging the gap between environmental science and clinical practice, ENACT aims to reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) across Europe through innovative preventive strategies.

The project focuses on understanding how the exposome—the cumulative environmental exposures an individual encounters throughout their life—impacts health. Instead of studying pollutants in isolation, ENACT analyzes the complex interactions between air, noise, and light pollution and their role in chronic conditions such as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.

Objectives

The main goal of ENACT is to translate population-level data into individual-level risk assessments to identify preclinical stages of disease. Key objectives include:

  • Comprehensive Modeling: Developing a multi-factor model to assess the interaction between environmental stressors and NCDs.
  • Exposomic Risk Score: Creating a standardized risk score to predict hospitalizations for acute vascular and non-vascular conditions.
  • Policy & Systemic Change: Providing actionable insights and visualization tools for policymakers and healthcare professionals to drive systemic improvements in public health.

The Exposomic Approach & AI

The project employs an Exposomics framework, integrating diverse data streams—including clinical hospital data, real-time sensor data, wearable device metrics, and socioeconomic indicators—to capture a holistic view of health risks.

AI and Data Science are at the core of the ENACT platform:

  • Predictive Analytics: Machine learning models are trained to identify early warning signs of disease and assess the risk of hospitalization.
  • Privacy-Preserving Infrastructure: The project utilizes Federated Learning and Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLT) to enable secure, cross-border AI model training without compromising sensitive patient data.
  • Personalized Alerts: AI-driven tools provide real-time, personalized risk assessments and alerts for both patients and clinicians.
