Development of Machine Learning Models for Fake News Detection in European Portuguese

Abstract
The rapid expansion of social media networks and online news sources has intensified the global spread of fake news and disinformation. This study focuses specifically on automated methods for detecting fake news in European Portuguese, addressing a gap in data availability and available models for this language. This dissertation proposes an architecture for developing a fake news detection system that explores the application of transformer-based approaches to European Portuguese news content. In addition, the proposed architecture utilizes accumulated model outputs to derive a company-level disinformation exposure indicator and examine its relationship with public attention signals, such as Google Trends.
